The author was born and raised in Bronx, New York, where he crashed his first car on his first day of ownership at age sixteen, and attended twelve years of Catholic school to which he credits (or for which he blames, depending on his mood) a great many of his current attitudes toward darkness and sexuality.

"The Light At The End" by John Skipp and Craig Spector is the first horror novel he ever read that balanced darkness and eroticism to his liking, and is the one he credits with interesting him in trying his own hand at the genre. The author has since drawn much inspiration from the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Poppy Z. Brite, and Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

An affectionate gourmand and horror film enthusiast, he has been observed to study the Japanese language, collect books and music like a man possessed, and enjoy sampling new wines and cuisines.
