ON RELIGION |
Real art is one of the most powerful forces in the rise of mankind, and he who renders it accessible to as many people as possible is a benefactor of humanity. I passionately hate the idea of being with it, I think an artist has always to be out of step with his time. An artist is a creature driven by demons. He doesn't know why they choose him and he's usually too busy to wonder why. An artist must be free to choose what he does, certainly, but he must also never be afraid to do what he might choose. The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work. Perhaps it's good for one to suffer. Can an artist do anything if he's happy? Would he ever want to do anything? What is art, after all, but a protest against the horrible inclemency of life? Asking an artist to talk about his work is like asking a plant to discuss horticulture. An artist has every right - one may even say a duty - to exhibit his productions as prominently as he can. |
