ON RELIGION |
Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet. I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires. Men never commit evil so fully and joyfully as when they do it for religious convictions. Where it is a duty to worship the sun, it is pretty sure to be a crime to examine the laws of heat. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear. Religion is the idol of the mob; it adores everything it does not understand. I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use. |
